چکیده
Through the use of the well-known Morrison/Wheat/Erkut ice hockey model, we demonstrate that even optimal solutions may be open to question. Based on the assumptions which are made to estimate data values, optimal solutions may vary among decision makers. We also note that under any reasonable set of assumptions, hockey coaches wait too long before pulling their goalies. tion made by Erkut is a major contribution to ice hockey as we dread the lumping of our Broad Street Bullies with other teams. While we very much endorse the generalization of the formula I n ancient times, Morrison [1976] preXsented the seminal analysis on the optimal time to pull a goalie in an ice hockey game. More recently, Morrison and Wheat [1986] realized that the original paper contained a major error and published a revised, corrected paper. Most recently, Erkut [1987] generalized the Morrison/Wheat (MW) model so that his students would not feel "uneasy" about the Morrison and Wheat assumption that essentially lumped Erkut's NHL Champion Edmonton Oilers with Morrison's beloved and improved Detroit Red Wings, We, too, feel that the generalizafor the optimal time to pull the goalie as given by

The “Man with Serpents” revisited. On a Figurated Pin from the Bronze Age Site of Shahdad (Kerman, Iran)
We discuss a figured pin from Shahdad, previously well known but published with a partial and unsatisfactory drawing. More detailed observations and a new, more realistic recording of this important artifact reconsider its stylistic and iconographic links with the imagery of the Halil Rud civilization and the eastern Iranian Plateau in general, and, at its opposite cultural poles, with Mesopot...
متن کاملStrategies for Pulling the Goalie in Hockey
This paper develops a simulator for matches in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the intent of assessing strategies for pulling the goaltender. Aspects of the approach that are novel include breaking the game down into finer and more realistic situations, introducing the effect of penalties and including the home-ice advantage. Parameter estimates used in the simulator are obtained through ...
متن کاملBertrand’s Paradox Revisited: More Lessons about that Ambiguous Word, Random
The Bertrand paradox question is: “Consider a unit-radius circle for which the length of a side of an inscribed equilateral triangle equals 3 . Determine the probability that the length of a ‘random’ chord of a unit-radius circle has length greater than 3 .” Bertrand derived three different ‘correct’ answers, the correctness depending on interpretation of the word, random. Here we employ geomet...
متن کاملMetadiscourse Markers Revisited in EFL Context: The Case of Iranian Academic Learners’ Perception of Written Texts
Moving in line with the postulation that metadiscourse (MD) markers help transform a dry and tortuous piece of text into a coherent and reader-friendly one, the researchers in the current study attempted to investigate the effect different metadiscourse markers might have on Iranian EFL learners’ perception of written texts. To this end, 120 undergraduate English students were given three diffe...
متن کاملHigh level Ab inito bench mark computaions on weak interactions (H2)2 dimer revisited
The Potential Energy Surface PES of (H2)2 dimer has been investigated, using five simple rigid rotor models. These models are called: head to head, symmetric side to side, L , steplike and T model. All calculations were done at two levels of ab initio methods: MP2(Full) and QCISD (T,Full) using cc-pVTZ basis set at singlet state of spin multiplicity. The results of scanning PES were then fitte...
